Hurricanes concern everybody, but boats are particularly vulnerable and preparing them adequately for a storm is essential.

Hurricane Preparedness
Even if one’s boat insurance covers hurricane damage, warns CJ Moore, owner of MooreMarine, owners must take the necessary hurricane precautions in order to be covered.

Unless you know exactly what you are doing, preparing a boat before a storm is best left to the professionals. As a full service marine centre, MooreMarine not only sells, rents and maintains boats and recreational watercraft, they are also available throughout hurricane season to help clients storm-proof their boats.

MooreMarine offers full storm preparation for boats, whatever the category of the storm is:

  • Boats can be prepped at their slip or taken to MooreMarine’s dry storage facility
  • Staff complete a full checklist including inventory, removing detachable items and securing non-detachable items
  • Trailers are anchored to the ground
  • Multiple dock lines and anchors are set if boats remain in the water

Seasonal tip:
During the rainy season, check your bilge pumps are working correctly. A faulty bilge pump could cause your boat to sink.

When bilge pumps are working overtime during heavy rain, they can also drain the boat’s battery which will in turn stop the bilge pump working. Check your boat and crank the engine to charge the battery regularly.

Services Offered:

  • Electrical and mechanical repairs
  • Dockside service
  • Gas and diesel engine maintenance
  • Fiberglass repairs
  • Steering and hydraulics
  • Short and long term storage

Try before you buy:
For those wanting a taste of the joys of boat ownership before committing to a purchase the “Leisure Boat Leasing Club” could be the answer.

Members of the club will have access to a fleet of 16 to 31 foot boats, without the responsibility of insurance, registration, cleaning, maintenance and dockage. Depending on the package chosen, members will be entitled to 21 or 30 days’ use per year. The initial fee plus a monthly membership will cover all costs other than fuel consumption.
