Ralph Lewis, or DJ Ralph to partygoers in the Cayman Islands, is known to many DJs and musicians as the Grand Master, having provided the soundtrack for many people’s favourite memories of Cayman’s night life ever since he started playing professionally at the Coconut Harbour on the West Bay Road in 1984.
DJ Ralph was also the resident disc jockey at Sammy’s Inn and the highly popular Bayview, which was a favourite night spot in the 90s, located where Breezes is now. Nowadays he focuses more on private functions and pointed out that he particularly enjoys playing weddings, whether on land or at sea on cruise ships.
Currently, Ralph can be found at the Office Lounge in George Town, where he hosts an event on the last Saturday of every month. For the past 11 years he has served as the man behind the New Year’s Eve celebration at Kaibo.
The DJ, who was born in Montserrat 50 years ago, has managed to etch out a successful career in music that has lasted 33 years, while maintaining a banking career for almost the same amount of time. And with the wealth of knowledge and the duration of time that DJ Ralph has been bringing dances to life, he is considered to be one of the most experienced practicing DJs in the Cayman Islands.
His notoriety soared in the late 90s when he hosted a popular radio show on ICCI FM, known as The Caribbean Connection, which ran for three years.
“My motto is service is top priority,” he says, adding that for 2011, he plans to expand his talents.
“I have invested in a highly advanced mobile karaoke system with which I intend to launch a new venture called Karaoke to go in addition to developing my computer skills in relation to sourcing new music and entertaining guests. The possibilities are boundless really.”
Slow jams, Latin, reggae, soca and calypso comprise only the surface of what DJ Ralph offers his audience and the veteran says he takes pride in being known for his mature approach and professional attitude toward his audience.
“I try to consider what the people want and what their experiences might be and then take them there, to that place, with the music.”
