Being able to spend time outdoors all year round is one of the things that makes the Cayman Islands such an excellent place to live. However, the sun and humidity can take their toll, so finding the right gear for your outdoor days is quite important.

According to Trevor McCann of Kirk Marine, looking for a clothing brand that provides proper sun protection yet is made with breathability in mind is very important.

Under Armour’s range of Heat Gear clothing is designed for conditions ranging from 75 degrees to 100 degrees, or in other words your average day in Cayman. The gear not only provides good wicking but also excellent UV protection to help you beat the heat more effectively.

Columbia is another company that specialises in clothing created for the great outdoors, with UV protection again forming a very important part of the clothing’s DNA. The clothing line also features gear specially designed for fishing, featuring plenty of pockets and loops for all the accessories you need to store. The line even includes outdoor gear for children, making it perfect for those family outings.

Of course, nothing is more part of the outdoor lifestyle than spending time on the beach and in the water, and with a wide range of swimsuits by B.Swim and Sunsets Inc Kirk Marine is well worth a visit. According to Kevin, these are really boutique brands, featuring top quality materials and trendy designs.

“Many people are really pleasantly surprised to find these swimsuits at Kirk Marine,” he says.

Staying hydrated is a vital part of an enjoyable day out, so water bottles and coolers are very important, with the store stocking a wide range of Coleman coolers, from 16 quart to 200 quart, as well as collapsible coolers and five gallon water jugs.

Where in fishing the story of the one that got away is a time-honoured tradition, in other outdoor activities proof is required when you claim to have done or seen something awesome. Go Pro cameras make this proof easy to come by, with the standard housings standing up to regular water-based pursuits, while a specialised dive housing will let you take the camera down to 200 metres.

Of course, fishing remains one of the all-time great outdoor activities, and this is something Kirk Marine is well known for, with everything from hand lines to top of the line deep sea fishing gear, including reels from Shimano and Penn. The store even has a custom rod repair service.

Add inflatable water toys, and of course toys for big boys including boats and personal watercraft from SeaDoo, and you have everything you need for that perfect weekend at Rum Point, from the means to get there to the clothing to keep you cool or make you look hot, and all the toys you need to have the time of your life.

To make it even more convenient, Kirk Marine is located across the road from Kirk Supermarket, which means that you can drop in before your weekend grocery shopping session. Just be sure to factor in some time to browse – your next adventure awaits!
